...

Hey everyone! I am Articuno360 here to review a game for New Years Day! Today I will analyse in detail Withstanding a Raindrop PART ONE by R0llerc0aster, a member on Sploder who is probably known by whoever plays every game on the featured page and whoever reads every review on the review page. This game was featured very quickly after its release, and an average player should be able to understand the editors decision to do so by trying the first level out. But, did the standards of the first level continue throughout the rest of the levels? Lets take a look!

Pre Thoughts

I was anxious for this game to be released because of the hype thread on the forums. I wont go into too much detail about it though as not everyone who will read my review has an account on the forums, but one thing stood out in it, and that was the promising trailer. From what I could tell, I knew it would have fantastic gameplay from the clips, and that overall, it would be a brilliant experience.

After it was released, three other factors caught my attention. First all the comments were positive and clearly showed us that R0llerc0aster pleased the rest of Sploder with this game. Next, we have the thumbnail. In the thumbnail, we can see a drop below the player. When hearing that the thumbnail is basically the player hovering over a long drop, we arent too impressed. However, you have to look at it in person to recognise that R0llerc0aster used contrasting tiles and wall tiles which blend together to understand that R0llerc0aster can make something as simple as a hole that transports the player to the rest of the game look awesome, and puts this question into our minds: If a something simple like a hole looks so great, what will the rest of the game be like? Finally, the fact that it was featured so soon after its release made me wonder, what about this game made the first, second or whatever editor to play this game, feature it?

REVIEW

Withstanding a Raindrop PART ONE is honestly slightly boring in terms of gameplay. In many platformer games which are feature worthy, there are little twists in the gameplay which makes it thoroughly enjoyable. However, I found this games gameplay a bit dry, a bit of a clich. Being sent from place to place to retrieve an item and coming back doesnt cut it for me. Usually in an RPG game like this, side quests make up for the lack of interesting gameplay, but again, this game didnt include any form of side quests. Id most definitely suggest adding more variation into the game, or somehow including some limits the player has in which to play the game with.

The scenery in this game is certainly above average. Although there was a lack of decoration blocks, I found that solid tiles you can walk on were placed perfectly. R0llerc0aster evidently took into account the width of the floors, the jaggedness and the colour compositions, and the care put into the scenery created strong and powerful atmospheres. But unfortunately, I dont think that the quality of scenery was continued after the fourth level, and where scenery had obviously been taken into account, nothing was really different, and the tilesets were mostly consistent. Something else I would suggest for Part Two would be to cover default ground with tiles, as there is always a more suitable colour for the ground when wanting to portray a certain atmosphere.

Withstanding a Raindrop PART ONE has perfect difficulty. It isnt too hard, which I am pleased about because it is only part one of Withstanding a Raindrop, and we need to understand what has taken place at the end of this part so we arent lost in Part Two. Still, you cant win it just like that. You have to put your mind to it. The enemy placement is pretty good; most enemies are forced to fight you, and on top of that, health is fairly limited. This means that you have to be very cautious when fighting the enemies, or you are very likely going to be killed.

Overall Scores:

Gameplay: 2.5/5

Scenery: 4/5

Difficulty: 4/5

Fun: 4/5

Overall: 3.5/5

3.5/5. I would say that Withstanding a Raindrop PART ONE is almost feature worthy, but it is certainly a great introduction to Withstanding a Raindrop. I think that this game would be worthy of a feature if there was variation in the gameplay, but I do understand that it is tricky to vary gameplay in an RPG. Even though I personally dont think it is feature worthy, the fun of the game definitely makes up for it, and Im excited to play Part Two, and maybe Ill review Part Two as well! Good job on Part One and good luck on Part Two R0llerc0aster!

Thanks so much for reading my review of Withstanding a Raindrop PART ONE, and have a happy new year!
