A review of Prehistory by Electronicus.

Electronicus asked me to review this game a while back, and I kind of forgot. So here it is, a review of Prehistory.

Pre-thoughts

I've never really played any of electronicus' games, and he joined only a month ago, so I really don't know if this game will be good or bad. The game window seems rather interesting, though I don't know what it has to do with the title.

After-thoughts

OK, so here's my overview: Electronicus definitely put a lot of work in Prehistory, with the top score being 8:24, and lowest score being 15:01, and my score being 11:24, though about 4 minutes was wasted on the sandblocks. This game is based on you using a time machine to go into the future, which actually goes to the past, and then you have to fight your way through the Paleolithic era while avoiding hazards such as lasers (?!) and activating switches (?!). OK, so the game traps and puzzles don't exactly fit the time era. The enemies do, though, with dinosaurs (snarleys) and cavemen (thugs and natives). At one point in the game electronicus makes the player think the game is very short is about to be over with, but of course, was a dud transporter. This game started to really annoy me with all the sandblocks you had to break, though, and the placement of the natives allowed them to continually run backwards and pelt me with spears. Lag was not a factor in this game, which would've ruined it, so that's good.

Now for my thoughts on how fun and believable the game: Um, wow. Since when are there lasers and energy switches in prehistoric times? And since when are there mario-style floating platforms and crushers in caves in the above mentioned time period? I have to give electronicus credit, though, these elements did make the game-play a little funner. If I could rate this game, it would be sort of low on believability, but rather high on fun. Oh wait, I am.

As for my thoughts on the scenery of this game, prehistory had nice amounts in it, though one area towards the end ~was~ missing backtiles. There were a lot of bushes, but not too many, and even on the floating tiles details were pretty good.

I'm sorry, but this game had a major con. It was EXTREMELY easy, with 4 hearts scattered around in the playing field, and I didn't lose a single life. Even if no extra lives were given, I still would've said it was too easy. Use of the power-ups were pretty OK, with a nifty idea of using a powergluv to move the huge fish out of the way, and having the general from the future you came from give you a grapple hook you need to swing over lava.

Prehistory could have used a lot more traps, that just adding to how easy it was. A good way to improve this game is to remake it with the newest platformer, which has more trap elements that aren't that futuristic. I personally saw a lot of good places for traps, none that were taken advantage of. Electronicus could have even used the boring sandblocks to make a trap that the player couldn't have gotten out of, so that would be a suggestion.

Well, I'm out of things to say, so I guess that means it's time for the ratings!
