Introduction:

Hello, and welcome to my 91st review and my 1st EGD review this year. Today, I will be reviewing Hero of the Day, an RPG plat by elroysice. Seeing as I've just beaten this game and it is quite a long game, I'd thought I'd be better off reviewing this game while it is still fresh in my mind. Elroy has been well known for making good platform games in the past, so this game has got fairly high expectations. But will this game do the trick for EGD? Find out in the review...

Review:

Hero of the Day uses a very interesting concept that you come across right at the beginning of the game and has a big impact on how the game is played. You basically start off answering a set of questions which leaves you to a certain game player type which depends on the set of weapons and tools you have during the game. On top of this you also receive a key meaning you also get checkpoints in certain levels in the game meaning you can regain the power ups. I really liked this concept seeing as it is something that I've seen before, but not in the way that elroy has adapted it. It also works well in the way that all three options are balanced as they all have one powerful weapon, a secondary weapon and an athletic move (e.g. roll). I must also credit the complex mechanism that must have gone into the part at the start of the game because I'd imagine a lot of players would just rush through that part without even realising it was harder to execute than they may think.

Hero of the Day was a pretty challenging game seeing as there were a lot of enemies and it had open spaced, complex, maps. On top of this, there were some pretty challenging enemies in there such as big mutants and big robots. However, I do feel there was a huge overdose of lives in this game and I ended up finishing the game with four lives and on top of this I also bypassed some lives because I already had the maximum. I do appreciate the fact there was a decent amount of lives handed out because this allows the player to get a decent way into the game, but it wasn't at all like it died down during the game which made it too easy. I think this was mainly due to the fact the power up I had, the gun, which was way too overpowered because most of the enemies I killed I didn't even come into contact with. Overall, there were some pretty challenging sequences but this was ruined in my opinion due to there being way too many lives and the power ups were too overpowered.

Hero of the Day was a game I enjoyed right the way through. It had a constant supply of enemies and a fair variety of them as well. It started off with quite a few mutants but as you progress you come across more types of enemies such as big mutants and robots. I also liked how despite there being big open maps, you would normally expect it be quite boring making your way around as enemies get less and less by moving back through the same places, but in Hero of the Day, I always seemed to know where I was going which made the game go by much quicker rather than spending ages searching for where you need to go next, which can quite often be quite boring. Hero of the Day did get quite repetitive with the sort same sort of enemies and layout in each level, but I was kept entertained by the way action sequences vary and the style of each level was different. And by layout I mean you're always exploring an open map, by style I mean different sorts of settings.

The game is very simple, but in my opinion, the game flowed very well and there were very few major flaws that let the game down. There were however a couple of issues I came across which I mentioned to elroy, but I believed he has fixed them now because they weren't really massive flaws. The scenery in this game was also fairly simple, but it still worked off pretty well and there is some great use of lighting effects. There were a fair range of tiles, although room for improvement in terms of scenery would be more interesting background tiles and decorations, and possibly even the use of graphics. Hero of the Day also featured an easy to follow and interesting storyline. It had a touch of humour into it which I liked, and I very rarely pay much attention to storylines in games, but I really liked the one elroy used in this game.

Overall: 16/20

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Hero of the Day is a fantastic RPG plat made by elroy, and I'd say it is in with a great chance of making at least the top 5 overall this year. Hero of the Day uses a very interesting concept, is really enjoyable to play and uses open, complex maps which managed to impressed me. My only major downside with this game was that it was a little bit too easy for me because of the over load of power ups and health. I highly recommend playing this game when you have the time, as it should take at least 45 minutes, possibly up to an hour.
