Out of Range is a game created by cyangaming

Introduction:

Hello, and welcome to my 101st review, and my 2nd EGD review this year. Today, I will be reviewing Out of Range, an arcade game made by cyangaming. Cyangaming has got 4 featured games on this account, made using the PPG and ship creator. However, he hasn't got a game featured using the arcade creator yet. Based on the fact he is a decent game creator, I was expecting a good game, but it would be interesting to see how he'd do using a different creator to usual.

Review:

Out of Range is a short, one levelled arcade game, with seven stages, five of being actual game play, but stage 4 is one of the most frustrating stages I have ever played in an arcade game. The game starts off pretty simple, and I generally don't lose any lives in the first two stages, but when it gets to stage 4, the game is so hard, I don't even know if it's possible. If it is possible, it is way too difficult, and this is evident in the fact that nobody is on the scoreboard, not even cyangaming himself has beaten it yet. Stage 4 is ridiculously frustrating because there is a bat spawn combined with lots of water, which really isn't a good combination whatsoever, as bats spawn at a rapid pace whilst the player moves slowly through water. There is a small amount of health given throughout this part of the game, but I've given this game, 3, technically 9 goes, because you have 3 lives given to you at the start, and still haven't managed to pass this one bit of the game. Generally, the game has smooth game play, isn't too overloaded with enemies and has a fast pace about it. I also like how there are optional paths within the game to pick up additional coins. However, these are pretty pointless to pick up because I don't even know if people will end up beating this game. Something that I also found frustrating is that the number of blue balls provided to aim at targets to unlock path was limited, and if you mess up with one, you basically lose a life. At least it wasn't too challenging to hit the targets though.

There is a reasonable variety of enemies included in this game, all of which are placed in good positions so they don't fall about all over the place. However, there were a lot of instances with enemies just on their own and are quite simple to pass. There are some cases where cyangaming has placed enemies that spawn, which does make the game more challenging, but in cases such as in stage 4, the bats that spawn at a fast pace with the slow movement in water just don't combine very well. I feel as if it was right for cyangaming not to add in any health for the first two levels, as it is very possible to get passed without losing much health, but I don't think the life in level 3 was necessary. If you lose a life in the first two stages, you're probably just not good enough as the first two stages are pretty simple, so if you lose a life in the first two stages, you probably deserve to keep that life lost. Supposedly, cyangaming could have made the first two stages a little bit more challenging, maybe to flow with the player's way into stage 4, because the change in difficulty from stage 2 to stage 4 was way too extreme, and just to add, stage 3 had no game play apart from the health.

Out of Range only has one level with 7 stages, 5 with game play, which is probably appropriate for this game because stage 4 is so difficult, otherwise having a stage as difficult as stage 4 for a multi level game wouldn't be a good idea, as making a game so hard so early on in a long game wouldn't be ideal. The first two stages were fairly straightforward, it had no health which I guess made it a little bit challenging, but not much health was needed because enemies were placed in where they didn't really pose much threat to the player. However, when the game gets to stage 4, that is when the real challenge kicks in. At least at this point the game is quite intense, but I don't really understand how to pass this part of the game because the bats chase you so fast and there isn't much health to go with the player.

Out of Range is quite a fun, fast paced game, but there isn't too much action as there aren't many sequences with enemies that pose a real challenge early on, and the action in stage 4 is way too hard to pass. As I've mentioned previously, there are some nice additional, optional challenges given to the player to earn more coins throughout the game, which gives the player some decision making to make rather than just following a straight path. One flaw that I can pick out which does slow the game down a bit is that the big green enemy required to be defeated to unlock a path can be very easily defeated by jumping on it, jumping back down and jumping back on it again repeatedly, without losing any health. I think it would have been a good idea for cyangaming to have added something extra to this battle to make it more action packed and challenging. I also liked the sequence in the game where the player had to collect blue balls to hit at targets, and once they were hit, other blue balls appeared to hit other targets, to eventually unblock a path. However, minimal health would have been lost here as the enemies in the water were easily avoidable. Generally, the first two stages of this game were fairly straightforward, and in the next stage, the difficulty of this game just goes to the next extreme.

Ratings (Out of five):

Action: ___/_____

Challenge: ___/_____

Game play: __/_____

Placement: __/_____

Conclusion:

Overall, this game deserves an average 2.5/5. For me, this game is very average as although this game does pose some action and challenge, the first two stages were way too simple, and then the next stage is so difficult, I don't even know if it's possible. The game is fast moving and smooth, but is limited with original action sequences. This game isn't feature worthy, and probably won't be featured for EGD because it's too short, and I think barely anybody will get anywhere in it, as in, not getting passed stage 4, but this is an okay game anyway.
