Introduction

Hey guys, this is Demonxz95 giving you a review of Magneticy by daveyja. This is a game that I've played before but forgot about, and then Bobbler featured it because he wanted to feature some games that have been overlooked and games by rather unknown member. Daveyja is not that well known of a member and judging by his games, I can see why. That's not to say he can't make something good. Every member can make good games that can arrive on the featured game page. I remember when I was less skilled at game making and over time, I think I've evolved pretty decently, but enough about me. This review isn't about me, this is about Magneticy.

Review

So, the first thing you'll see in the game is a title screen with an E for Everyone (or Epic as it displays in the level) rating, the Sploder logo and the game title. As we can see, the thumbnail of this game is... bad. It has a few nice touches but it's just a black screen with a few details here and there. I think davey could've put a little bit more effort into this thumbanil than just a black void. I don't want to start off a negative note though.

One of the first things in the game you'll notice is how simple the scenery is. Just checkerboard foreground and gray background. The scenery in this game is very "meh" (and I look at the scenery of a few of my games and it's pretty much the same story). So far, this review sounds negative. Well, this game is featured for a reason so is there any positive light in the game, yes there is. The gameplay of this game is really good. It's such a simple concept, but such a good one. The main idea of this game is using magnetic abilities to attach to dark gray blocks (hence the pun in the title) to avoid or cross over hazards and this is done in a nice way, although at certain points, it may be possible to be pushed through the ground. I never felt that enemy placement was problem, just gray block placement wasn't perfect. I actually really like the flavor this game has to offer. It'll acknowledge a stealth approach which is done in level 2 (not counting the intro), using the dark gray blocks to cling to the ceiling and drop down when the enemy passes by and activating something will unleash some enemies to be rushing after you. After a little while, you'll also be passing lasers which intermittently flash a deadly beam of light. You'll also find a few one-off sequences such as blocks with arrows that when you attach to them, launch you into the direction of the arrows. How daveyja did this, I don't know. This guy appears to have a lot of potential up his sleeve.

The boss of this game was... underwhelming to be honest. It had a really cool idea with the ceiling you attach too and the laser that shoots on the ground, but the entire level is completely normal. It could've not had the leader or boss or whatever you want to call it, and it would be almost not different at all which isn't something you want in a boss level. A boss level is suppose to focus on the boss and the means to kill it. Some gameplay parts are fine, but there's no interaction with the boss at all which is unfortunate. However, the game has a redeeming factor for where it didn't do well in the main villain department. After defeating the migimiwagit, you're trying to escape. While you're trying to escape, the building is coming apart and you'll see this quite well with falling ground pieces and occasional cracks, and then a helicopter escape sequence which is really easy when you know how to do it. Afterwards is a credits level and I must say, the credits is actually really good. It not only thanks you for playing but also a few random members for graphics and stuff like (and even contains a joke). Not only that but it tells you about a hidden easter egg in the game, which I think is really nice because it will make people want to play again to find it and this is a small detail I think some makers may not have done.

Great gameplay

A few instances where you could be pushed through the ground (extremely minor)

Conclusion

My original instinct was to disagree with the feature but honestly, the game was fun enough and had enough really nice ideas and moments to justify the feature even if the scenery is very underwhelming. It's however definitely a game worth trying out and I think Bobbler made a good move featuring this otherwise, not very well known game. This is your host Demonxz95, I hope you enjoyed this review. Demonxz95 out.
