Pre-thougths

Yet again, your very own Dudki is back with a review of another EGD game. We are around half-way done with the reviews but there are still a bunch of other great games to take a look at. Tyrant by rocketeer is a game that I had been hyped for, during the weeks before EGD 7 started, and I know rocketeer for making some great adventure platformers. So, that was exactly what I expected with this game. But was the release of Tyrant truly worth waiting for? Find the answersin this review.

Let me start at the thumbnail, as always. I'm going to be complaining a little. Why, you may ask? Take a look at rocketeer's MS profile, and look at the thumbnails of each of his games. See? Most of them look very similar to each other, with almost the same tiles and scenery. I will be talking more about this later. Looking at it, it seems that rocketeer is running out of ideas and making sequels to one game however, that was not the case. As to the thumbnail of Tyrant itself, it's alright. It's just that after a while of seeing the same thumbnails, it get's a bit boring to look at.

Review

Let me just go ahead and say, that Tyrant is worth waiting for. You can clearly tell that rocketeer has put a lot of work into this game, and I must commend him on his work. Tyrant features exciting gameplay and action sequences, and the game also allows you to explore your surroundings, which I really like in a game like this. During your first playthrough of the game you will be finding yourself walking for maybe 10 minutes in a single level before you find all the hidden power-ups and items. This adds variety to the game, allowing you to choose a bunch of paths to go. The only thing that I didn't particularly like, was the fact that the game itself is actually pretty easy, once you know what to do, and where to go. But apart from that, everything played out well.

Rocketeer tend to focus a lot on combat in his games. During your time playing Tyrant, you will almost constantly be facing enemies. The best about the amount of action put in, is that the enemies range all the way from bats, to robots. You see many different enemies, and this also means that you will need to think about how and when to use your certain power-ups and weaponry in order to fight the more stronger enemies, which you will face a lot of.

I completed the whole game, but didn't see any of what I would call "puzzles". Yes, I did actually see one, but that was very simple and appeared very late in the game, and I think that's actually a dissapointment. Many of the areas you explore in this game, like ruins and caves, would be the perfect place to place at least a few puzzles. I think that would have made the game just a bit better.

Traps are important in some games, while there are preffered not to be there in other games. I'd personally prefer this game without traps. Because the game is so long, adding traps can really make people rage-quit and not want to go through all the effort to complete it. Rocketeer did actually place just a few, but with a large space in between them, and I actually like that. Placing just a few traps, which aren't too difficult to avoid, can actually add a lot to a game, and I think rocketeer thought about this well.

I have always admired rocketeer's use of scenery. It's unique and different from every other creator I have seen. Everything he makes suits the scene and it's very nice to look at. However, if you take a look at a couple of his other games and compare the scenery, you will see that a lot of tiles used actually look exactly the same, and this is what I was talking about earlier as well. It seems that rocketeer doesn't have many ideas for new types of scenery and he I found that a lot of scenery from Tyrant were re-used from his past games.

During the game, you are given a bunch of additional weapons to help you take care of baddies. That is, if you choose to explore all areas. That's right, rocketeer scattered power-ups all over the levels, so in order to get health or a new weapon for your arsenal, you would have to explore, which I absolutely loved. Doing this, makes people want to explore and see all the work that has been done to a single level.

The placement in this game was good. Rocketeer knows how to place objects well, and although this is true, I saw some objects which I found was placed badly. Among these are the enemies. I found that some of them were placed a bit off, and I felt that some blocks were also unnecessary, and some of them could get you stuck.

Pros/Cons

Pros:

Gameplay: The game featured some very nice gameplay, keeping you interested in playing further.

Action: Good amounts of action, and a large variety of enemies made the game so much better.

Traps: A few traps was placed, however there were not too hard to avoid, and you wouldn't face them that often.

Power-Ups: Good amounts of power-ups, requiring you to do a bit of work to acquire.

Cons:

Thumbnail: I feel like I have seen so many games with a thumbnail looking like this. Not only rocketeer's but also others.

Puzzles: The number of puzzles could have been increased just a bit to add a little extra to the game.

Scenery: Although the scenery was great, I feel that the scenery has been used before in previous entries by rocketeer. I guess we can call this one "Neutral"

Placement: I found that some objects were placed badly, while others were just unnecessary.

Ratings

Gameplay: 3.5/5

Difficulty: 3/5

Action: 4.5/5

Puzzles: 0.5/5

Traps: 4.5/5

Scenery: 3/5

Placement: 3/5

Creativity: 4/5

Overall: 3.5/5

I think Tyrant deserves a 3.5 in overall rating. I really liked playing through this game, and it offered me a lot of things, ranging from fighting, boss battles, exploration, and storlyine.

Feature-worthy?

I would say yes. The game definitely stands out from a lot of other games, and although it has similarities with rocketeer's other games, I still think it's worthy for everyone to try out.
