Locked Out is a game created by splatter

Hi all, review number 22 and it'll be on a game by Splatter, Locked Out. I know splatter reasonably well via the forums and he's one of the coolest guys you'll meet on here. He's quite good at game making and this beauty was released for EGD 6 (Epic Game Drop). As the reviews are coming along slowly I've decided to pick up the slack for my fellow reviews and kick off with a few coming reviews, so expect to see a couple more from me soon. In this review I'm going to get straight to the point, it may or may not be any good.

REVIEW

Locked Out has a classical kind of feel to it, and in a few ways resembles a few of Tookewl's legendary games from back in the day, the Locked In series comes to mind. Anyway, Locked Out is a pretty large game, and for most computers will slightly, though evidently lag in a few of those intense rooms, reason being the amount of mechanics in and around the game. The lag wasn't enough to make the game too much worse, but it did ruin a bit of the gameplay.

Locked Out includes many puzzle scenes that were well designed, and keeping that classical feel, most of which involved some cool mechanics using switches (which did contribute to a lot of the games lag, by the way). Some of these were better then others, some were a bit too trial and error and almost *needed* to be seen on the walkthrough first, it could be a bad thing in a way, but usually it was okay. The puzzles were great, and there were a few sneaky traps too.

To liven up the game there was some action throughout the game, but not to be outweighed by the puzzles. In the areas where there were mortars under rocks, obstacles and crystals, it left you with multiple options, you could either get close the each individual rock and shoot with the regular gun to eliminate the mortars and eventually some health that you would've lost, or you could stream through as quickly as possible. So some health loss could be easily evaded which isn't the greatest as there was a fair amount of health throughout the game anyway.

The placement was usually quite good, even if it seemed a little messy in a few enemy areas it all served a valuable purpose by the looks of things. The health was placed a little too early in my opinion, depends on the skill of the player though, so it seemed to be a fit for everyone.

The game got rather redundant occasionally which was a little of a let down, but it wasn't a major problem, I would've liked to see more creative sequences but I was confronted with a few areas twice, or sometimes they just were stretched out and lasted too long, more of a personal irritation, really.

Finally, the game didn't bring many new concepts to the table, I'd seen most of what it had to offer before.

RATINGS

Gameplay: 3.5/5

Puzzles: 4/5

Mechanics: 5/5

Action: 3.5/5

Placement: 4/5

Overall: 4/5

Feature Worthy

Definitely, I don't see how it isn't feature worthy, but it's not quite at the standards of an EGL berth. There wasn't enough new and original concepts in the game to really compete for a spot in the EGL, though a brilliant game with a classical feel, it was made well and there wasn't too many faults.

A very well made game, I reccomend you check it out and give it a play, or at least watch the walkthrough if you can't venture far enough.
