Crimson is a game created by peterzhang1

Back with another review, bringing you number 27, I'm reviewing in an attempt to dust off the rest of the EGD games so us Reviewers can get back to reviewing regular games again. Let's go;

I don't know Peterzhang1 very well, he gets a bit annoying at times, but he seemed to have a few solid games from what I've seen. A pretty clever maker but not really getting much attention on his games. Well, it was EGD week and Peter entered with his game Crimson, and for most, EGD week is a time for the undiscovered talent to be uncovered, and Peter was one of them.

Review

The gameplay is particularly creative throughout most of the game, it worked laglessly with creative and fun type sequences, rooms and more. What I found great, was how intense a simple platformer could be, very rarely you'd come across something placed without a purpose. Enemies were wise choices and matched up with the seems pretty well, what was impressive, was how he used certain blocks and tiles to your peril. The gameplay overall was above average and set the scene for the game overall, it had an addicting element which at times, is hard to perfect.

The scenery wasn't overdone or drastic, nor was it predominantly bland. I found it simple, but I liked it. The interesting choice of blocks and tiles which matched the scenes, as did the backwalls of a few different types, blending together to form mosaic like patterns. Ice and other blocks with unique and sometimes lesser used textures were used to add a bit of flamboyance into the game. Once again the scenery wasn't great, but for me it was above average and mostly well done.

The puzzles were cleverly designed, though for me I'd seen them all before. However, in Peter's own game making style he added a few small aspects to each puzzle that he used to keep the creativity going, which is nice I guess. He did use a single clever gun puzzle though, which I won't spoil for you.

The enemy placement was mostly okay, above average, yeah. At times they seemed slightly scattered, but the design in which they were added made up for it. Occasionally there positioning made it extremely easy to bypass or defeat with little to no health lost, which is something worth looking into to improve. The enemy choice matched the scene and each enemy had a perk, and always were there for a purpose, whether it was for a puzzle, or a sequence (which I'll talk about next).

My favourite part of the game for sure were the sequences, they were creative, and also surprisingly intense. They were usually cleverly designed and placed with hazards and with enemies contributing. Since I don't want to spoil the latter parts of the game I'll paint a picture with one of the earliest sequences. Ice blocks used to make you slide into spikes on other side, with bats and an archer's arrow contributing to getting pushed into those hazards, along with spikes raining down on you from the ceiling. Sound easy? Wrong, this particular sequence had more to it, to pass the particular area you needed to climb a ramp tile slope with a gear working against you, while the archer's kick making you fail repetetively. Just a small insight on a clever sequence to start off the gameplay. Multitasking of keys would be on the cards often too.

Gameplay: 8/10

Scenery: 6.5/10

Puzzles & Traps: 7.5/10

Placement: 7/10

Sequences: 10/10

Total: 8/10

Great game Peter, I hope to see more from you in the future. I'd say this game is feature worthy, too.
