Fear of Life is a game created by bgscurtis

Seeing as I was recently made a reviewer, I decided to make a thread on the forums asking if anyone would like a review. My brother, bgscurtis here, asked me to review Fear of Life, which I reluctantly accepted.

Pre-Thoughts

Bgscurtis is a great game maker, especially when it comes to platformers. Having 2 in the legendary Epic Game Library, I am looking forward to playing this game and finding out the challenging game-play within it.

I was not disappointed. The game is very good, using few puzzles but some epic action sequences. The start of the game is very inventive, as it seems the whole game rely's on it. Whatever you do there affects the games difficulty, your health and possibly your ability to beat the game. Normally deciding what to do would take time, but unfortunately you have very little of this, due to that lovely red fellow with the hammer looming above your head.

The start of this led on to equally satisfying game-play. The action sequences were intense, with objects around you which can give you or your enemy the upper-hand. The puzzles tended to be simplistic, and I was slightly disappointed here, but the redeeming factor was one took me totally off guard, and although simplistic, I had to chuckle at my carelessness.

Although good, there were some bad things, such as being able to avoid some enemies, or the fact some hazards didn't activate. The second may have not been bgscurtis's fault, but I believe this took away from the games difficulty.

There wasn't much scenery, but I felt this didn't matter. I can tell design was focused on nonetheless. The way Fear of Life used design was quite clever, using back-walls only in caves to make it darker, whereas when out of underground areas, you could see the background, which I believe in some games does not work, but in this game it does.

My favourite part of the game was probably the ice section. It uses obstacles, enemies and ice block to make it as difficult as possible to get to the top. My least favourite bit was probably the gear puzzle. It is so easy to avoid and is unbelievably basic. But because of the rest of the game, I'm willing to let it slide.

Overall, Fear of Life is a great game. It uses action and goes against a players natural instincts, which is something I love about it. It has a great story and some good design. Some basic puzzles and being able to avoid some of the enemies was a slight let down, but still, Fear of Life is certainly a good game.

Final Thoughts

A very good, feature worthy game. It's better than a lot of platformers out there and is certainly deserving of it's 8/10 overall score.
