Pre-Thoughts

Staylor21fan seems like a good game maker and mature member. The thumbnail shows promise and along with the title, I’m drawn towards the game. It has a 3 and a half star rating, but ratings on the site can be touch and go with games like glass of coke having the same rating as this. Well, let’s do this.

The Review

Now I didn’t technically beat it, but I’m putting my foot down and saying dying right beside the last crystal counts. I was not disappointed with Humble. Basically it’s an explorer game, with no direct path, but it requires you to search around for keys, weapons and of course crystals. The game is good. Saying this it’s not spectacular, it’s not amazing, but it shows potential and I believe staylor will go on to great things.

It’s a pretty basic. I run around, kill the enemies, and find the crystals. It got a bit repetitive in places as he used the same style of enemy placement. If only he’d used this repetition to his advantage, using it to make the player feel safe so he runs forward, expecting to go head first into enemies and BAM! PermBlock activated and you’ve got to start again.

There weren’t really many puzzles and only a few traps, which was disappointing. I mean, I’m all for an action only game, but in this some of the enemies could be killed without you being hit at all, so a puzzle here or there would of gone amiss. Although, where there were traps, they tended to be pretty good. They used decorations to block your view, making you feel safe. If lured into the traps, you’re mainly met with a lava pit, meaning one slip of the fingers could mean a great chunk of your health, or more possibly death.

I liked the scenery; it was obvious time was taken to ensure that the blocks and background corresponded well. Unfortunately, there was no story to go with this. I may have liked it more if there was a scenario to suit this scenery, which can when do correctly, can make the game absorb the player and make him feel as if the game is a mini world where you can escape from real life for a couple minutes.

My favourite part of humble was the exploration aspect of it. While playing, I desperately scoured around for the keys and crystals and I must have visited each area about 3 times. This meant nearly every enemy had to be killed, which I believe is a good aspect of it, as in some games you can skip enemies and not come back, in Humble you may come back to an area again where you have skipped an enemy and the only way to escape without dying is to kill the enemy ASAP.

My least favourite part was probably power ups. They were over used. Through the game, I may have fallen in lava for a couple of seconds, which would normally handicap my progress for the rest of the game, which is good, as I made the mistake. But in Humble, for every Hazard there’s a health. There were also 2 lives, which I found unnecessary as for a skilled game player, not dying would have been hard. Basically, too many power ups.

Overall, the game was better than most of the nooby releases out there, but couldn’t top some of the better plays out there. Too many power ups, decent action, some traps but no puzzles. My recommendation? Take away power ups, adjust enemy placement and add some puzzles.

Feature Worthy?

Although the low score, yes. It’s only that low due to the power up placement.
