Undertale Custom vs Yoshi is a game created by lavalinn

Before the Review

I have always taken great pleasure in watching reviewers write a review about a game that has less than 100 views and giving both the game and the creator more views for of them to show off their talent. I want to accomplish this here. Although lavalinn is a pretty well-known game maker, Custom vs Yoshi of the Undertale series has not got the attention, I believe, it deserves. Although I would not rank this game feature worthy as it does have a few bugs in it, I do think it deserves some more views, because of the amount of time that lavalinn has dedicated to it. So, without further a'do, let's get into the review!

Introduction

I recently began playing the Undertale series made by lavalinn. I can say it is one of the most fun series on sploder that I have played. It is never as difficult as most reviewed games, yet it kept me interested and challenged the whole time I was playing them. I liked the fact that depending on the level you are on, it changes difficulty, meaning that you are never stuck on level 1, and always stuck on level 7. Like the rest of the Undertale series, lavalinn has dedicated a lot of time to the game. From creating their graphics to working on all of the physics of the game himself. Although this may not sound like much, using their graphics on each level (excluding the intro) is a huge accomplishment in itself, after seeing how many graphics were utilised in the game.

Review

After the first two intro levels, the game begins. At the start of the game, the difficulty was pretty easy, just finding Yoshi, but as the levels progress, you can start to see how lavalinn designed the game to get harder gradually, without you realising (until it dawns on you that you have been on the one level for 10 minutes). I also really applaud the way that he adds difficulty while simultaneously including the storyline. For an example, instead of just creating Yoshi quicker, he explained that he had eaten a mushroom, (the typical power-up in Mario that makes you speed up). Evidently, this displays their extraordinary ability to both create a good game and adapt an interesting storyline that repeatedly draws you in. It also helps you keeping interest in the game.

Looking at some of the graphics used, you can tell that he has spent a good while creating them. Usually, most users don't look at how detailed graphics are in games, as they aren't looking for it, or the pace of the game is too speedy for them to notice. In Undertale Custom vs Yoshi, you have the opportunity to stop and admire some of the graphics in the game. Obviously, the standard user doesn't, as they are attempting to get a good score on the game. The amount of detail that goes into say, Yoshi's eggs, is incredible, even though the standard user will just plough through them to get to Yoshi, lavalinn still spent a significant amount of time designing and created the graphic. It genuinely is amazing just to stop for a moment, and look at how lavalinn has managed to make certain sections complicated and packed, liked the introductory levels, yet keep some levels simple, but not bland. I believe it is hard to find a good amount of graphics on each level, and I think lavalinn has found the perfect ratio.

Despite its many positives that I could stand here all day and list, well, sit, the game does have a few issues. Most of these are just physic issues, like being able to climb walls and remain there, avoiding attacks. And on one level, literally being able to just out the arena and escape Yoshi out of the world. Another issue is that there is no real backstory to the character. We don't have a clue why he is visiting Yoshi, and why suddenly he is dodging Yoshi and his never-ending supply of eggs. But even with these few cons, the game is still a fun play, and I would recommend it.

Pros:

- Fun gameplay

- Superb Graphics

- Use of physics creator paid off

Cons:

- In-Game bugs that lower enjoyment

- No character backstory

Conclusion

Usually, reviewers tend to focus on Featured Games, or recently EGL's. I wanted to review Undertale Custom vs Yoshi because it is just, simply, a fun game. It has a great concept backing it's gameplay up, and to top it off, all of the game levels contain lavalinn's graphics. (I was informed he used a couple of other people's on the intro levels). Do I believe the game is feature/EGL worthy? No, it has too many bugs with it. However, even if I never see it on the featured page, I hope lavalinn knows how many users he has entertained with his Undertail series, especially Custom v Yoshi. I hope he continues to create incredible additions to the series, and I do truly hope one day he earns his rightful place on the featured page.
