Endless Night is a game created by lordeldar

Hi there! Welcome to my very first review, a personal achievement for myself. Anyway, I was searching through some of lordeldar’s games, and I found Endless Night. I played it, and I desperately wanted to review it. So for my very first review, I shall be reviewing Endless Night by lordeldar.

Pre-thoughts:

We all know lordeldar, a fellow reviewer and a fantastic game maker. Endless Night was made back in July, where lordeldar didn’t make much Platformers. I can see by the thumbnail this is a plat. (I’ll explain about the thumbnail more in the “Thumbnail” category) Right now, I’m questioning if this is going to be an exceptional, or a terrible game. So my expectations are just below average, because lordeldar hasn’t made much Platformers back then.

Thumbnail:

By looking at the thumbnail, I can see some pretty decent scenery is involved. Checked squares are used as backgrounds, which I have to say, makes the game look more appealing to me. There is two owls (One on the right, and one I can just see in the top left hand corner) so there might be a whole lot of text blurring right out at me, which most of the time I don’t enjoy. And I have a feeling I will have to go back and forth, because of the door the character is in front of. Overall, the thumbnail looks quite interesting, despite its minor flaw.

Gameplay:

The gameplay was great, not fantastic, not good, but great. I found the gameplay was enjoyable and nice and action packed. The only thing I didn’t quite enjoy was travelling through the tunnel. I found that quite average, but not as if I was going to fall asleep. To me, the tunnel was to straight forward, and I just wanted to get it over and done with. Everything else I found enjoyable. So despite the bore in the tunnel, I found the gameplay great.

Review:

I have to say, Endless Night is a special Platformer. I shall no longer be questioning if lordeldar’s Platformers after playing this. Endless Night is a stand out game. I have to say, this game is impressive when it comes to adventure. It has a fantastic adventurous aspect to it. I really can see all the care lordeldar put into Endless Night. But there was a minor flaw, a turret in midair, but I’m sure this was an accident. As for the length, it was average. It took me somewhere around the six minute mark. But, the game design was quite short, but since you have to travel back up the tunnel, it extends the time.

In Endless Night, a story was included:

“Normal Night, Normal Events, Normal Boring Full Moon. Actually, that's a Stupid Sentence, it's not true. But if you want the Truth here it is. The Full Moon is Endless, the Events of an Endless Night are Catastrophic. Not only are there Werewolfs around, but a Zombie invasion has begun. And the Demons are breaking out of Hell. The Full Moon is Powerful, and so is the Challenge. But that doesn't mean there is no Hope. If you can find decent Shelter you may be able to survive this Endless Disaster. And that's what you are about to do, but the Doors Locked, and there's a Certain Power that's needed to open it. But it involves going out into the Open. Can you survive the Endless Night?”

I actually liked this story. It relates to the game, which is a great thing. As for the story itself, I found it quite interesting, and did I survive the Endless Night? Yes I did! Overall, a great storyline, with some interesting description.

As for the enemy placement, it was almost perfect. There was some minor issues in the tunnel, at some spots it seemed a bit plain, and could’ve done with some weak enemies (Example: Bats, Ninja boy, Mongol) to get a bit more of your health down before you reach the end of the tunnel, when things start to get more complicated. But as for the choice of enemies, it was great. It related to the story line, the Mutants looked like zombies, there was a Fire Troll that played the part as a demond. But there wasn’t anything that looked like a werewolf. :( Never mind. Anyway, great enemy placement and fantastic selections of enemies.

All good things must end. Have you ever heard of that sentence? Well for the power-up placement, it wasn’t the best thing about this game. Sure, many people have played it, and the majority of them haven’t passed it. But for me, I finished the game with all four lives left, and again, all three lives left. So lordeldar didn’t really hit the target with health placement. Ok, now I’ve talked about the terrible bit about power-ups, let’s talk about the good things. Health placement (Not including extra lives) was great, even though very few Health Kits were placed, the health kits were placed in fantastic positions. Great job with health, not so great job with the extra lives.

Let’s talk about the fantastic scenery Endless Night had! In each shelter parts, the scenery was great. Looking onto the back wall I could see some great great designs the game included. One of them was a checkered type background. If you look onto a chess or checkers board, you will notice the pattern on it. Black will go all diagonally across the board. That’s what a background pattern was like in Endless Night. It attracted my attention, lordeldar stunned me with the beautiful pattern he used. Such beautiful colours, and such a beautiful background. Congratulations lordeldar! You had me staring at that background for a long period of time…

Right, let’s move onto creativity. Endless Night, creative some places, it’s ok the next. That’s what I thought. So, what made me say “it’s ok” you ask? Well, the fact that the tunnel was very repetitive, and I didn’t see anything special in it. That’s probably the only part, and for the creative things, SCENERY! Yippee! This was phenomenal, epic, fantastic and creative with its background design. Also the story. Sure, it might not be in the game, (Unless you count text blurring out at your face) but what a fantastically creative story!

Endless Night didn’t have much puzzles in it. One puzzle was using your Power Glove to move a mechanically enemy in the lava. Other than that, no puzzles! Altogether, the one puzzle was simple, but some of the other great things made up for the lack in puzzles. As for traps, there was a Ninja boy in the final boss battle at the end. You couldn't kill him, and he would through ninja discs at you. So altogether, one puzzle and trap.

Pros:

Scenery: The great scenery design was lovely to look at. I wouldn’t have been more pleased then that fantastic design lordeldar made me play through.

Story: The story to Endless Night was a fantastic story. It related to the game, which was nice to see. I wouldn’t have had wanted a story about pixies, and then come into one of the most darkest game I have played.

Enemy placement and selection: Lordeldar placed great enemies in spaces. Also, great enemy selection. The enemy selection relate to the story.

Cons:

Extra lives: Finishing Endless Night left with four lives left isn’t the greatest extra life placement I’ve seen.

Tunnel was boring: Travelling through the tunnel was a bit boring for me. Once I got out of the tunnel, I was happy that I didn’t have to travel through that boredom again.

Ratings:

Action: 4.5/5 Endless Night has some fantastic action. Great action was provided for me. So thumbs up, the action gets a 4.5.

Placement: 4.5/5. What was a let down was the extra lives I talked about before. But seeming as other people have trouble, I can’t take away as much points. Other than that, placement was pretty darn good.

Puzzles and traps: 1/5. One very simple puzzle! Yep, just one. Other than that, all the other things were fabulous (Well, almost) and made up for the lack of puzzles.

Difficulty: 3.5/5. I didn’t exactly pass it the first time, but the fifth time. The reason this happened was of that greatly placed Fire Troll. It would always kill me when I had the Mace, and after that I threw a temper tantrum.

Overall: 4/5.

Conclusion:

Overall, Endless Night was an epic game. The reason why it got four out of five was because of the lack of puzzles. More puzzles could’ve been added to the game, but lordeldar didn’t place them their. But still, Endless Night is a special Plat.

Feature worthy? Nope. I thought that there wasn’t enough puzzles. Their could’ve been at least one trap as well, like a simple trap like this. A checkpoint on top of some spikes, which were hiding behind some grass. Anyway, it was a great game, and I enjoyed playing it, so I still like it.
