Hey guys, it is your pal Spell here with a new review requested for me to make about a little known game named (','..',') made by myownself. Now before I begin this review, let me give you a little backdrop about this game. This game takes place in a cave you stumble upon after reading a journal entry written by a man who also stumbled upon this cave. Now this cave isn't your ordinary cave you would find if you were to travel to a place such as Cave Island (an imaginary place I just made up because I don't know where you would find caves, this cave is actually full of aliens that have inhabited this cave long before you stumbled upon it. These aliens, like most, try to kill you, but lucky to you, you remembered your glock, a laser gun, a couple of land mines, a handful of RPG's, heat-seaking bots equipped with uzis, and of course mortars. The perfect survival kit made to blast away any enemy. Alas, you won't find much use for your arsenal until later in the cave.
Now, this cave is split up into two parts, one, is mainly a story progressor, and the other, is a full blasted action game. What I plan on doing in this review is grading each half separately, and then taking the average. Of course, since I am a decent grader, I won't grade an adventure game on puzzles. In fact, unless the game IS a puzzle game, I will rarely grade it on puzzles. Another thing to keep in mind, I am an EXTREMELY harsh grader, and don't even take into account my past reviews as I have gotten even harsher than before. So even if the grading is something you wouldn't see be fit for the EGL, I still may say it is.
ON TO THE FIRST HALF OF THE REVIEW!
In the first half of (','..',') you need to collect an array of crystals (possibly crystals used to make a communication device) and 2 crates filled with supplies, most likely used to keep yourself alive while down in the cave. You must do this, while progressing deeper into the cave via switches. The only problem I have with the switches is that it may be confusing on where to go next or what you have touched already but I will expand on that later in the review. This is basically all there is to the beginning other than a couple of aliens here and there, but myown made sure you had MORE than enough health to fight them off. What I decided to rate the first half of the game on is its plot, enemy placement, item placement, fun, originality, replayability, lag, and progression.
So let's start off with the Plot. I personally thought the plot was pretty good, and contrary to the addition of aliens, wasn't cliche at all. I mean come on, when do you find aliens IN A CAVE!? lol, But in all seriousness, I liked the idea of what seems to be a treasure hunter, following a trail of journal entries written by a previous deceased man who was trapped in the very cave the treasure hunter now stands. As you progress further into the game the journal entries reveal that the cave is actually what you should be worried about rather than the aliens. In fact, the cave is WHAT is controlling the aliens to attack you. Overall, i'd give the plot a 8.5/10. While not being the next thing that Steven Spielberg spewed out, the plot was memorable enough to get a solid score.
Now we get to move onto something interesting, enemy placement. Now, i'm not going to say every enemy was placed perfectly to make the most amazing action sequences you will see, but it wasn't horrid either. In one part particular, the enemy placement had to make you think in order to get around safely. That place would be right in the beginning where the hot poly is situated. You have to be very careful not to get shot by one of the disruptors as to not burn up by the hot poly. Another place I liked in particular is the double disruptor on the cave rock. It is only possible to get by that part in one way, but I won't spill the beans. Overall i'd give the enemy placement a 7.5/10. While having some good spots, there were multiple areas where myownself could have placed them better.
Yay, I get to right stuff about item placement! I'm on the borderline with this one. The healths in the hot poly area were placed rather well, as to make you run for your life in hope to get to the mega health before you die. But other than that, I wouldn't really commend myownself on his ability to place mojo boxes perfectly. I know that it was part of the story... but still... come on. lol Another part I didn't neccesarily like was the crystal placement. They were just all over the place, like why do you need to have 3 crystals in one area where you can collect them all? Overall, i'd give item placement a 2.5/5. It had some good parts, but others weren't that great.
Fun, the age old question and probably the most important category there is. Was this game fun? I believe so, while it wasn't so fun to get lost in this cave (trust me, I DID get lost and not know what to do) those times were few and sparse. (','..',') was a very fun game, and maybe I got that because the story was kind of eerie and what you learn while exploring in the cave adds to that sense of eerieness. But I generally thought the game was fun and that is why I give it a 17/20. It was fun, action sequences would make it more fun, but the game WAS fun.
Did Myown make an original game? I haven't seen a game where there are aliens in a cave, or where the cave is the main enemy, so the plot is original. But what about the rest of the game? I actually haven't seen an exploration shooter game that uses the switch polies on sploder yet. So originality is a 10/10. Once again, this game hasn't been made before as far as I can tell.
Replayability. This question comes up often while reviewing a game. Will I have fun replaying this game? While, you probably won't have that much fun replaying the game as there is nothing else to do, you really don't need to if you have beaten it already. And if you haven't beaten it already , then you won't have much of a problem running through the game until you get to the point you were last time as all the game really is, is a trail of poly switches. I'd give this game a 4.5/5 for replayability.
Does this game lag? YOU BET YOUR TOUSCHE IT DOES! Jk, I did not experience any lag whatsoever in this game, which is a BIG deal for me. That is a 10/10 for that.
Now onto the last part of the first half of this review. Progression. What is progression you ask? What I am grading this game on, is how smoothly do you progress through this game. Now these poly switches can get REALLY annoying when you don't know where to go next. Mainly because MYOWN DOESN'T TELL YOU! :( But if you can get over that, like I did, then you will be fine. Because the rest of the game progresses smoothly. Overall i'd give this game a 8/10 on progression because of those few annoying parts.
The first half of the game scores a 58/70.
NOW ONTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE GAME.
In the second half of (','..',') your task is to kill some aliens and do some other stuff. As you can see, I didn't really pay much attention to the story of that part of the game. Mainly because I was too busy fighting for my life. Yes, this is the action portion of the game. And myown's favority part of the game. This part of the game will be graded based on enemy placement, fun, and lag.
Enemy placement. The enemies in this section of the game were actually placed pretty well. Leading up to some traps, a boss fight against centepedes and in the end actually blowing yourself up to kill the part of the cave (not going to spill dem beans) that is turning these poor... and deadly creatures that were previously trying to kill you. By the way, as you noticed, I was lying earlier about not paying attention to the rest of the story. I'd give enemy placement a 9/10. Not perfect, but a 9 from me in this category is a pretty outstanding feat.
Fun. This part was pretty fun, I still honestly thought the first part was more fun. SORRY MYOWNSELF. But this half shined in its own ways. Instead of focusing more on exploration, this half went straight on action. So I think with all this in consideration, i'd give this half of the game a 15/20 in the fun category.
Lag. THIS KILLED THIS HALF OF THE GAME. It may have not lagged in many parts, but it was definitely noticeable, such as the dreaded wait to get to the blue key. OH MY GOD. LAGGED LIKE CRAZY THERE! A 8/10 for the lag in this part.
The second half of this game gets a 32/40 from me.
NOW EARLIER I ALSO LIED ABOUT TAKING AN AVERAGE, I AM JUST GOING TO ADD THEM UP THEN MAKE IT OUT OF 10. SO COME ON KIDS AND COUNT WITH ME. (58 32)/(70 40) = (90)/(110) = 8.182/10.
DO YOU GUYS REMEMBER WHAT I SAID BEFORE? JUST CAUSE A GAME DOESN'T GET A 9 OR 10 DOESN'T MEAN I DON'T THINK IT IS EGL OR FEATURE WORTHY. IN THIS CASE IT IS BOTH. AND I KNOW THIS REVIEW IS KIND OF BAD AND NOT HUGE OR ANYTHING BUT I DON'T CARE. :) Have a nice day.
