A review of Summit by autumnwinter

Opening Remarks:

This review is sort of special, because I am only going to be writing two reviews for this EGD and they both are going to be for games that got in the top 3 overall and 1st for their categories! Autumnwinter has really showed his skills in the ppg this time and Im excited to be able to give him some feedback! I havent actually written a review for over 2 years now so apologies once again as I shake off this rust. Lets begin the climb, shall we?

Review:

Summit is a very appealing game, having a variety of game mechanics/puzzles and nice graphics. The direction of the story is quite interesting. It begins where you, Nikolay (19), learns your brother, Gustav (23), is very sick and you are the only one able to make a cure. That should be easy right? Unfortunately you are several countries apart and Gustave has built his cabin on top of Mt. Domna. In order to save your brother you need to set out on a journey across the frozen mountain range and climb to the top to save him. Quite a touching story that helps Autumnwinter set us up for quite the adventure.

Each level is different, providing different challenges for Nikolay to overcome. There are no enemies in this game other than yourself and the cold, but there are tons of creative puzzles to face. Some levels you may be left wondering what to do, in many of those cases Autumnwinter was kind enough to throw in a tip/hint phone booth, which I thought was a clever way to provide hints. It was nice to see the difficulty mostly increase with each new puzzle/level that I came across; just as it becomes more difficult to climb the further you would climb to the summit of a mountain.

The graphics are wonderfully done and definitely helps to set the tone of the game. Each level felt new and fresh with interesting new scenery and puzzles. Theres honestly not much to say other than that the game felt like it was a complete solid product with all the graphics complementing each other. The shadows on the trees was a nice effect that was seen throughout the levels and helped make the game seem even more polished.

Ok, so as I always say, no game is perfect. Summit has some puzzles that could use some work and others that were sort of out there. The math puzzle level had an issue where you could walk through the locked gate without using the key, the slider puzzle level was a little tedious with 3 puzzles to solve in one go, the color key puzzle (for the bridge) seems a little out of place, but all of these are still ok levels in general. Other than the mild annoyance or little overlooked issues there isnt much else I can find to criticize this game for, it just feels like a solid game that keeps things interesting.

Okay, time give out the final verdicts.

The Good: Good graphics, story and interesting and fresh levels.

The Bad: The tediousness of some of the puzzles at times.

The Ugly: (Not really that bad really) Just needing to polish the game a little more and sometimes the vagueness of the puzzles to figure out what to do.

Gameplay: 4.5/5

Creativity: 5/5

Decoration/Feel/Background: 4.5/5

Traps: (didnt have really any or need them) VOID

Addictiveness/fun: 4.5/5

Conclusion: 4.6

This game was a real treat and Im glad Autumnwinter decided to make it for this years EGD. It definitely deserved the first place ppg, first place amateur, and 3 place overall for this year. The ending credits for this game were even good! Definitely deserving of the feature. Congratulations Autumnwinter, Summit is a great addition to sploder.
