The title is a blatant lie. Thanks for clicking on my review, though.

Intraban? A Game by Ravicale

Lets begin with a little bit of back-story on the game and it's creator. First of all, The Device was originally meant to be called Intraban. As far as I know, it was supposed to be a larger game with more to offer. With the new platformer update, Ravicale released it early as The Device. I assume it isn't as epic as Intraban was meant to be, but either way it was a great game and I enjoyed playing it immensely. Ravicale is a very popular user and moderator on the community forums, but what about the mainsite? On the main website, Ravicale is known for his games. From my past experiences with his creations, he constructs massive adventure games, as well as smaller scale mini-games. Whether big or small, Ravicale has a plethora of interesting ideas and incredible RPGs. The Device wasn't a huge game, but it did take me a good 20 minutes to complete. But, it got something down perfectly...

Stealth. This game got it down perfectly. What do I mean by this? Placement. The enemy placement was nothing less of perfection in The Device. You may see stealth incorporated into quite a few shooter games, but it's rarely something you see done so well in a platformer, and Ravicale got it down. In platformers, you'll commonly just run at the enemy swinging your sword randomly, but not in this game. Every once in awhile you'd get an easy kill, but almost every enemy in this game was set in such a way that you had to develop strategies. You couldn't just run into a room or space shooting randomly, you had to come up with smarter approaches. Sometimes you'd have to give up trying to kill the enemies all together, and just figure out how to get past them with your health. The probes flying around made me careful where I went, making me duck into buildings to get to safety whenever I saw a pack of them. It isn't often you see placement like this, especially in plats. Well done.

The difficulty was actually somewhat disappointing. Considering how well the enemies were placed, once you figured out how to get past them, seldom would you lose much health. A game being easy isn't a bad thing, but I got through this in my very first try. I felt like it could of been much more challenging with a little bit less health and a few more hazards. The slightly ironic thing is that there actually was one part that made me lose at least two lives. The scene in Level 3 where you're hitting the switches to get across the lava was brutal. It just didn't feel right, that one single part nearly cost me the game, while I flew through the rest of it without too much of a problem. Did this ruin the game? Not at all! I just felt like the difficulty didn't live up to my expectations. But hey, what's wrong with an easy game? Absolutely nothing.

The scenery was magnificent. Beautiful, to say the least. It definitely went further than I would of expected. Ravicale without a doubt did a job well done on making the game look good. What I like about it is that it really does feel like a sort of futuristic city. Quite a few games have great scenery, but The Device really did capture the atmosphere of the storyline. Not only was it pleasing to the eye; It was pleasing to the game itself. Considering the limitations of the default scenery pieces in the platformer, The Device did a great job of making the game look real. I'm also happy with how the colors blend. The color scheme of all the levels really do fit together, it's never tiring to the eyes. You can make a game with all kinds of insane scenic creations, but you have to go a little bit further to make it as aesthetically pleasing as The Device did.

Out of everything this game did, it's easy to tell that placement and scenery were the most ingeniously implemented. I played demos of this game while it was still Intraban, and the question I ask myself is; Did it live up to my expectations? It definitely was much more smaller scale than Intraban would of been, but am I satisfied with The Device? The answer is: Yes. Yes it did. It definitely wasn't perfect, the difficulty could have been altered, and the storyline was done well yet definitely could be better. But, the pros beat the cons, and I'm happy with that. This game hit stealth and strategic battles on the nail, and the scenery blew me away. This was a great play, I had fun getting through it and the replay ability is very much there. If you haven't played it yet, do so, it's worth it. It lives up to what I thought Intraban would be, it was a great game.

I'm giving the placement 5/5 points, next to the scenery, the placement was definitely my favorite part. Of course, I'm giving the scenery 5/5 as well. Aesthetics were great, it all fit together great, well done. The difficulty is going to get a 3/5. There's nothing wrong with an easy game, but it just seemed to go up and down. One part would be easy, then it would get hard, then easy again, it was sort of all over the place. Storyline? 4/5. Could have been written better, but it all fit together well. The NPCs were placed well, and it all flowed. I'm giving the placement an extra point, considering games rarely do it so well. Altogether, this game gets an 18/20. A great game by a great creator.
