Pre-Thoughts

Ever since the platformer was released, it's been quite popular. Throughout the years, people have improved with the use of the platformer, creating fantastic puzzles, great scenery and great action sequences. Wait, my mind's gone blank. Please wait a moment while I try to remember what I was about to say... Oh, yes. Mat7772 is a great example of a member who can produce those kinds of games, after creating games such as Little Boy, Realm of Fog and Dark Days. Blank Mind, a generally challenging puzzle game, could be classed as one of the games. Considering that the game has been featured, it proves that Mat7772 has produced yet another glorious piece of art. With my expectations high (unique puzzles with good scenery and use of many different items# I willingly challenge myself by playing the game.

Review

The thumbnail is quite interesting. It doesn't give anything away in the game. All it is, pretty much, is just a blank room with nothing other than a grey and dull scenery. It makes my mind blank (see what I did thar?) and it gives nothing away from the game. It doesn't tell you if it's a puzzle game, an action game, an RPG. Nope, nothing. It keeps the mystery through one simple teleporter which will take you to the real challenge. I quite like the idea of keeping the game content away from the thumbnail. However, the thumbnail does look pretty dull and boring. I guess Mat7772 designed it that way to relate to the title, which is a decent idea.

Like the thumbnail, the scenery fits the title of the game. It's pretty much black and white nothing. There's not much to offer from the scenery, but it's designed like that to make it fit in with the title, so there isn't a question of why does Blank Mind have the name. There isn't much really to talk about the scenery, so I scurry ahead...

The gameplay was decent, challenging and exciting. Ever since I clicked the play button, I immediately had to look for a walkthrough. Almost every single step you take will pretty much lead you off to a brand new puzzle never to have been seen before in platformer games. He even managed to include a big sword puzzle, which to be honest, I have never seen before in any puzzle platformer games. The puzzles pretty much make you stop and think for a while to see what you have to do to win. It just keeps challenging you almost every step you take and the flow of it is just flawless. There wasn't a lot of action sequences involved, but then and again, the focal point of Blank Mind was the puzzles, and I'm pretty sure they should be enough to keep you entertained.

Now let's focus mainly on the puzzles - the key point of the game. As I have already mentioned, all of the puzzles used in Blank Mind were challenging, unique and new. With almost every step, there's a new puzzle that forces you to stop and think. There was a large variety of different puzzles with different items and weapons you can use, and the puzzles weren't repetitive at all, which I like. If the puzzles were repeated, then... Well for one it'd be pretty stupid that the game is featured, and the game would be pretty boring. The weapons for puzzles were used quite effectively, as it was like a puzzle on its own. All of the weapons were open for anyone to just grab, but you need to think about which weapon you need and when. And since there was only 1 weapon of each type, and since there were puzzles of which you had to kill yourself, the weapons will disappear, never to be able to use again until you try the game again, so you have to think about when taking the weapons, which I also liked about Blank Mind.

With the placements, there's nothing really to complain about. When I was playing the game, it looked quite neat and tidy. Most of the placements were incredibly important, as they corresponded to the puzzles that they were used for. In some cases, if even 1 block was moved out of place, it could possibly wreck the puzzle. But Matty placed it neatly and all of the puzzles managed to work. Nothing at all looked out of place and untidy, the game was clean and tidy as it needs to be.

Cons

There wasn't really any cons that I could find, to be honest.

Conclusion

He's done it again - mat has successfully created a challenging and fun puzzle game, which I would say was feature worthy. It might not be worthy of an induction into the EGL, but it's above average. I would recommend you play this game to prove my review correct, and to see for yourself.

For now, it's a goodbye from me.
