Tomb of Solace is a game created by jcaldwell

Well hi there! Happy that you're here and reading my Review, it'll be my 9th Review. This has had many Reviews before, but I'm not one of those reviewers who thinks a game shouldn't be Reviewed more then once, I think that it's silly xD. Anyways, let's move on to the body of the review, shall we?

Review

Jcaldwell has been a great friend of mine, pretty much since I joined Sploder when he helped me out a little, in fact, if it wasn't for him I'd of never became a Reviewer, so there's a little fact for you, and here is a little way to repay him! We've been good friends for a long time and still chat very often, so now reviewing Tomb Of Solace will be an interesting experience for me as I still haven't Reviewed any of Jcaldwell's games before. The thumbnail is brilliant from what I first saw of it, it has a nice background tinge and good tile selection by the looks of it, and even more so the thumbnail seems to fit the title to perfection. The storyline is original and unique, about am Archaeologist exploring the Tomb Of Solace. It getss me pumped by the introducing but I'm still wondering how good it will be, it's his first Featured game so I'm looking forward to it.

Excellent Action And Gameplay, But It's Laggy For Me...

The gameplay was excellent for me, but there were quite a few ups and down sides. There was superb action and I found it quite enjoyable, but more often then not finding action is finding lag, even if there was only a mediocre portion of it, it let down the gameplay in the slightest but most annoying way. I still thought there were a couple areas of fast paced action, but the majority was quite slow..

There Shall Be Statues And Etchings In This Tomb..

I thought the scenery was quite good, not blunt and boring, but not overly fantastic, I rthought it was good. First off, I thought the tile selection suited the game very well as did the background. Now to the more detailed scenery. In Tomb Of Solace I found that there was an excellent use of statues in positions where it seemed realistic, where you'd think they actually would be. Quite honestly it was one of the best things about the scenery, but looking back on the game Im absolutely sure there were some etchings too, correct me if I am wrong. Overall the scenery was good but I would of preferred something else, to where I got to there didn't seem to be many crates, I think crates would be a good addition to the scenery.

Was Their Expertise In Placement? Probably Not...

The placement is always very important in a game, but in Tomb Of Solace it was one of few small downsides. i thought that the enemy placement was too cramped, and certain enemy areas had 1 or 2 more then necessary, leading to an early death. I found it a little annoying and in some parts you couldn't go a single corner without being hit by an enemy and no health around when you had the last ounce of your bar remaining. The placement seemed overloaded in honesty, but I thought some of the placement of the switches were good and just at the write length in intervals to make it challenging but still possible which was a plus.

I thought the tile and block placement was pretty good, and the way that jcaldwell placed the statues seemed like the real thing, at leas this is a little better and I quite liked the layout.

Puzzling.... I Didn't Get Too Far..

I didn't progress to far past the game, but I think there were a few small puzzles that I came across, I never really got too far into them due to the extreme difficulty of the game. Although to make this paragraph les sof a waste of time, the traps were ~superb~. I foudn the one with the orange switches and perm blocks with lava underneath one of the best and most simple, however most challenging puzzles, although I think Jcaldwell over did it with spikes AND turrets, it would've been fine the way it was.

Difficult.. HELL YEAH! Creative, Methinksso.

I found Tomb Of Solace extremely difficult, but I thought it was too diffuclt for my liking. I got a little further and got to the early stages of the third level (practically second seeing as level 1 is an introduction) but as a 7 level or so game, i'd of liked the difficulty to be decreased slightly so i could explore the Tombs Of Solace a little more ;). Although I wouldn't try that now, be cautious as editing sometimes unfeatures games! The difficulty was a nice touch, but a little ~too~ much. Anyway, the creativity was excellent, I loved the title, storyline and the way it felt when playing the game, it really gave me the feeling of being in a Tomb.

Final Scores

Gameplay - ____/_____:

I enjoyed the actionism (is that a word?) in the gameplay! It was a fairly consistent portion of action but I was quite disappointed at the lag at times, you cant have everything though I suppose.

Scenery - _____/______:

The scenery was fantastic, from tiles to walls to etchings to statues. I found it fantastic and although I think something extra could be added like more us eof crates, that's not enough to bring the rating down.

Placement - ___/_____:

I honestly though it was a little cramped with enemies, but I thought the tile placement was fairly good.

Puzzles & Traps - ___.5/_____:

I liked the traps which were really good, but there weren't any major hard puzzles to where I got to, anyway.

Difficulty & Creativity - _____/_____:

Y U MAEK GAEM SO DIFFICULT? Lol, I found it extremely challenging and I thought the creativity was one of the best things in the game, besides the great Scenery,

Total: ____.1/_____

Feature Worthy?

Did Tomb Of Solace deserve the feasture? Yes, of course I do. I actually made a thread requesting it to be featured, and luckily enoough Youngcaliman found the thread and agreed with my judgement, so it was Fetaured. I think the game ticks most of the boxes, there were a few minor downsides but those could be overcome and weren't that big a deal to take away the feature. I thought the game was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed the creativity and fantastic scenery.
