Nightmare Escape is a game created by electronicus

Pre-thoughts:

Well, electronicus has definitely built his reputation as one of the greats, known for his superb decors and his amazing scenery. When he makes a game…O_O…: O…

Review:

To start off with, I think that the title must be what drags people into the game and should describes it perfectly, too. Well Electronicus’ game’s name got both right. Nice touch, Elec’.

Level 1:

We’re in a temple. An extra life is given to us in front of an inscription that says: “Choose wisely: Mace or grenades” (I’m not telling you which one is better to choose). Here, Electronicus used in an ingenious way the level doors: At the start of the level, the door we go in after choosing the grenades appears WIDE open tempting us to choose’em… But will we follow our temptation? Or will we just choose the mace and go through another hidden door? At this point I was already eager to find out what was ahead...

Level 2:

Best level B.T.W.: Off we go in a deep hallway that leads us to a wall of cinderblocks. If we choose the mace, well then destroy the fu**ing wall and continue. If not, then we have to move our a** and get up a ladder to pass some tests and get the mace… And if someone is screaming “YAY” because he choose the mace, then let him start crying, because, after destroying the cinder blocks wall, jumping over a lava pool and destroying some tugs in an abandoned church, he’ll have to run under energy beams to get the grenades: Cavelns are preempting his road! What can I say, Electronicus, you nailed it: You found a way to equalize the power of the mace and the power of the grenades! Let’s continue our path through Nightmare Escape… Aww, first flaw: The nooby puzzle of “Sprint through the energy beams before you die”… I mean, when will you guys learn that this trap is out-of-date? Finished, done, zero, zilch, nada! We really need to do something about this! Why don’t we just keep moving on? Ah, nice trap: A corridor where bouncers push us up in the air so we get stuck after entering through a trap door. Then, a small rollercoaster will track us up into a lava pit! Phew, we have an extra life. After passing the corridor, we take a crystal and jump over some tugs to enter a level door. Personally, I didn’t hit any tug once, not once… People should work on how to place the enemies…

Level 3:

Longest and worst level (that doesn't mean it's bad)... We'll find ourselves standing in the middle of nowhere, like in almost every game Electronicus makes, and that’s what makes them so typical, so epic! No brightness, we continue walking through trees and bushes. We find an extra life in a tree, and two bats in a bush. We continue and suddenly fall down in a tunnel. When we land, we find ourselves in a large pass decorated with etchings and torches. We arrive to the csplode trap: we need a key to go up, so you pass an energy beam (SAME EXACT DUMB FLAW) and when we get the key the csplode starts going down. Fine trap. Now, Electronicus offers us to take an armor after jumping in a lava pit from where we can go back up, or to just continue without losing any health… I mean, seriously, Elec’, who needs the armor? We fall down through a tunnel full of turrets and bats (nice puzzle). Well, now, a very nice puzzle: a tunnel going down, a tunnel going up, and, you guessed it, a tunnel going straight. If we choose to go down, then we should start saying goodbye from now: Some spikes are waiting for us with some nice decoration though… If we go up, well… we can’t go up, we need a switch… So we have to keep going straight. Another tunnel intersection: Down or up. If we go down, we’ll arrive in some lava, but Electronicus gives us the chance to go up again, erasing the challenge… If we go up, we walk by the magical switch and we can go all the way back to continue. I’m not gonna continue all the game, cuz it’s kind of full of flaws: an unnecessary water lake, unneeded buildings…

Pros:

Excellent power-ups’ placement, outstanding art-work, fine enemy placement, nice traps, very few ambiguities, if any.

Cons:

Erasing the challenge, the last part that was literally a piece of bull…

I’m glad I played this game, it’s mind-blowing, astonishing and perfectly fits with Electronicus’ standards. It’s definitely worth a play, and I would recommend it to everybody. And I know it is just my opinion, but I’m sure if you have half a brain you would agree.
