The Gamer is a game created by deathleaf

Why hello there! Once again, you are reading a review from me, mat7772. And once again I am writing up a review, which you are reading right now. Okay, I may as well tell you the game I am reviewing, and the maker of the game for my seventh review. So I am reviewing The Gamer by deathleaf. Now, let’s move on, I’m not going to spend all day on the Intro.

Pre-thoughts:

Well, I’m pretty sure we are all aware of deathleaf, if you are not then give yourself a slap in the face, because he is an epic game maker. He holds all of the Mainsite positions, so my expectations rose dramatically, because Editors and Reviewers tend to make good games (Well, uh… usually, lol). And from those eleven featured games deathleaf has my expectations have rose, yet again. So the score I am expecting this game to get is around about 4.5/5.

Thumbnail:

Well, it looks plain. All I really can see is that there’s a little bit of scenery and a door. That’s it, which is quite disappointing. I wanted a thumbnail that looked hyperactive, but I don’t think there’s going to be much action. Well that’s all I can really say.

Gameplay/Review:

The game starts off with a wizard, general and an owl introducing you to Gamer. Gamer is a game where you go into the game and play as yourself. That goes on for one full level. After that, the real fun begins. There’s action, puzzle, traps and challenge. I also loved the fact that the majority of puzzles were new. It was quite impressive because I struggle to come up with puzzles for the Platformer creator.

Well, this game was filled with puzzles, and as I said earlier, the majority of them were new. Some of them were a real struggle to figure out, and some were as simple as lordeldar dropping his ice-cream. As for traps, there were quite a few, but simple ones. For example, on level two there’s trap doors aligned above lava. Some were not real danger to you, while others lead you to death. There was also one were you went into a dead end in a tunnel and a cl0ser would close, and some where you had to move objects to clear your path. That’s all I noticed. So overall, puzzles were excellent while the traps were good.

The enemy placement was spot on. I think deathleaf could’ve done no better. The enemies that weren’t used as puzzles were placed quite strategically and sometimes stunned you, leaving you as a sitting duck. (Yes, I got shot!:O. A little gun guy stunned me and I got shot! X__X) Well, that’s all I have to say really, sorry for the short paragraph, I’ll make it up to you by giving you a cookie! (::)

The power-ups and health were quite limited. At times my health bar would be so low, and I was in a battle, I fell off my seat because I survived, with one nanometre of health left. (Yes, a nanometre. For the young ones, that’s like dust, tiny.) But at times, I wished deathleaf would put a cookie in there, for two reasons. One, my guy was hungry, and two, I needed a tiny bit of health at times. And the extra health placement was fairly good, considering I only got it when I truly needed it. Yes, so health placement is excellent.

Okay, I’ll start off by saying that the scenery isn’t very good, especially the second, third and fourth level. As for the first level, it was alright. From level two, the scenery is very plain, and doesn’t make the game exciting for me, because it looks bland. For me, scenery makes the game more exciting, because it makes the game look and feel a bit more hyperactive. Overall, scenery isn’t a plus thing about the game.

Well, it’s safe to say deathleaf was creative with this game. He used lots of puzzles that he made up, and included a creative storyline throughout the game. I don’t think I could call anything in The Gamer uncreative, maybe just some of the traps, so good job deathleaf, you’ve blown me away.

Pros:

Creativity: As I said earlier there was nothing I could call uncreative in this epic game. From puzzles to some of the traps, from the design to the precision, everything!

Puzzles and traps: The puzzles and traps – especially the puzzles – were very good and creative. However, some of the traps were a little too simple and weren’t as creative as the puzzles, but that fine, I still loved them! (Oh come here baby.)

Enemy placement and variety: As I said earlier, enemy placement was spot on. I wouldn’t think about adding or subtracting any enemies, because they are and used placed very well. Also, the enemy variety was also good. The enemies made it feel like a real, techno world.

Health placement: Health placement was extremely good. Even though I didn’t quite complete The Gamer, I got quite far into level four, but sadly died.

Challenge and addictiveness: Well, this game is quite challenging, but definitely possible. I almost completed it, but not quite. Also, the challenge of the game made it extremely addictive, and I was hooked on this game for half – an – hour.

Cons:

Scenery: The scenery was extremely bland and didn’t make the game as hyper as I would’ve liked it. (I like hyper things. Myself can also get a bit hyper at times as well) But, some of the scenery made the game feel like a techno world, which I know deathleaf was aiming for.

Ratings:

Action: 4.5/5. The action was quite strong, even on the first level. The only level that didn’t have much action was level two, but that was focused on puzzles and traps more than anything. Otherwise, all the other level had phenomenal action.

Difficulty: 4.75. This game is definitely difficult. Even though I haven’t won The Gamer, I got very far into the game. The difficulty also made it very addictive.

Creativity: 5/5. I think the creativity in this game is totally awesome! I wouldn’t have thought of puzzles, traps, basically everything was creative.

Puzzles and traps: 4.75/5. Overall, I would give puzzles 5/5. They were creative, new, and quite challenging. However, some of the traps were good, but not good enough to get a 5/5, so I reduced the score down to 4.75/5.

Placement: 4.5/5. The placement of everything was quite good. However, block placement could’ve been improved a tiny bit more in level two, to prevent cheating.

Overall: 4.7/5

Conclusion:

Overall, I give The Gamer a 4.7/5. The Gamer game is a star game. Despite the lack of scenery, I found this game truly legendary. I definitely recommend this game to everyone. Even if you don’t like challenging games, have a go, because some things (eg. Puzzles, action, creativity) are truly amazing.

Feature worthy, in my opinion, yes. I loved the creativity in this game, and the fresh new puzzles, and I think that this, and of course the game, should be recognised. Truly amazing, I’ll finish my review at there…
