Thats right Eth, were still waiting for Undead. But well save that for another day.

Platforming games in the PPG arent really my cup of tea. Sure, they can be pretty good but theyre often limited due to the space the PPG provides you with, so I was skeptical when I saw Undead making The Undead Redemption, a sequel to his previous game, The Undead Revolution. I wasnt really expecting anything mind blowing from The Undead Redemption, considering the previous game wasnt anything amazing, but was I proven wrong?

The Undead Redemption sees the player play as the ultimate ego of our good friend Undead, where you must stop the grinch of Death from stealing Mai, the damsel in distress who was silly enough to get kidnapped AGAIN. Along the way you go through a series of different environments until you fight on Deaths ship or something (which was my favourite level, well done on that epic final chase scene Undead). While jumping through these crazy levels its clear that this game excels clearly in its presentation, the scenery is absolutely beautiful, Id go as far as saying that this is the best looking PPG on the site, so kudos to Undead for that. I never found that any of the levels were an eyesore or were distracting when I was playing the game. There isnt anything to falter here, its pretty much perfect.

The actual gameplay isnt as good as the scenery. Most of the game is just dodge enemy, jump over hazard, hit a switch and get to the end. Admittedly there isnt much you can do for a platforming PPG due to the limited space, but that doesnt necessarily mean it was terrible. I was actually fairly impressed with the game. There were bursts of creativity with hazards such as falling boulders or chase scenes, and even simple mechanics like jumping up on a platform from underneath it were enough to satisfy me. However, the design wasnt perfect. All the levels felt fairly similar, you just had to travel in a straight line while jumping over dangerous looking things, none of the levels really spanned out and gave you the option of choosing which path youd like to take, even a level as simple as something like parkour which doesnt have a linear path but gives you multiple options to take would have been a great switch up from the rest of the game.

I do have a fair few complaints about the game though, and they all come in the forms of devious hazards and traps, and let me say that there are a fair few. The very first one comes at the first playable level, where an innocent looking heart that I assumed would give me an extra life decided that instead, it would drop this trollface looking boulder thing on me instead. Right. It doesnt get much better when in the next level, a platform decides to fall when you step on it. What would have been better is that if some visual hints were given, say the platform would appear to be wearing away or something, I would have been a lot more impressed and if I did fall for the trap, Id be blaming myself rather than the lack of warning the creator gave to me. Id also would have liked it to have some sort of warning signs earlier if a boulder was going to drop unexpectedly or if an angry Moola decides that hes had enough of me.

Overall Id say The Undead Redemption is probably one of my favourite platforming PPGs I have played on the site. Its presented beautifully and the level designs were decent, although they did become slightly repetitive. Where this game drops the ball is in the traps department, they became frustrating and gave the player little to no warning. Well done to Undead on a really fun and enjoyable game.

3.75/5
