Ferromagnetic is a game created by gooey

Last year I reviewed Gooeys game Rebound. At the time I had no idea this user even made games, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I played. EGD rolls around (hehe puns, because you roll around in Ferromagnetic) and I see Gooey is making a PPG game titled Ferromagnetic. I was pretty excited, but was skeptical about whether it would top Rebound.

It didnt just top it, Ferromagnetic smashed it.

Ferromagnetic requires the player to roll around and basically reach the end of the level. However, there is a small twist. The player can activate the magnet ability by pressing the spacebar. While this may not be a completely new and groundbreaking concept, Gooey turns it into one by completely reinventing the ability. While many games that have it as its prime concept focus on you only sticking to something to avoid a hazard, Gooey goes much further than that. Essentially every sequence feels new and unique. The first level that has gameplay shows that you can roll up walls using the ability. When you progress further, more objects are added that spice up your life, and theyre quite creative and really bring a smile to your face. Levels even involves the player to use their magnetic ability to gather objects that stick to them in order for them to safely roll across spikes. Ferromagnetic is an excellent example of taking quite a common concept and putting a twist on it.

The scenery in Ferromagnetic gave the game a charming atmosphere. Most of it was grey, which now that Im typing it, doesnt make it sound particularly interesting. However, I really liked how Gooey used mostly prefabs instead. While the graphics creator allows you to create whatever youd like, Gooey succeeded incredibly well without them.

My main complaint is that the end feels kind of lackluster. Sure, you got some sick as sequences but the game doesnt quite deal the final blow. The final level of gameplay doesnt feel like the final level. It introduces something new that makes me think thats nifty, but after I completed the level I was interested to see what crazy ideas were going to get thrown at me next. Make your escape! the next level says (or something along the lines of that), so I thought I was going to have to pull off some next level James Bond tactics.

Hahaha, nope.

Instead, I get the privilege of WATCHING the character Ive controlled this whole time clumsily bounce around an area filled with shooty things before escaping, without me pressing a single button. I would have preferred a boss battle, or at the very least taking control in that final level.

Another small complaint I have is that four out of the nine levels have no gameplay in them. I cant help but wish there was at least two more levels where the player had to do something. This doesnt mean completely getting rid of some levels, but the first two levels and the last two levels had you literally doing nothing. If Gooey had merged them into two levels (one at the start, one at the end) maybe we could have had some more balltastic action. O:

Overall everything was really solid, but I would have enjoyed a little bit more content. Nevertheless, Gooey did an awesome job creating Ferromagnetic, and it deserves its placing in EGD10 (it came fourth out of 28 games).

4/5
