Games are a whole lot scarier in the dark than in light. You must agree, don't you? However, in many of these horror games, that one moment when you see a/the monster, it gives us, the player, a foreshadowing of what the game will be. In Melonheads, it does exactly that. It is a game that will stay as quite possibly ONE of the most frightening experiences on Sploder. The only thing that keeps you from going totally insane is a torch, and a sword.

Note that I didn't really get far into the game due to tiredness, so I can only write about what I HAVE experienced.

Melonheads gets the opening spot on for a horror game. You start off outside Mel Trubaino Orphanage, a creepy, most likely (and by most likely, I mean it is) haunted and abandoned orphanage where balloon-shaped zombie-looking beasts(?) come to life, who are easily killed with a blow from a sword. Within seconds of spotting the first weird-looking beast, you know you have made a terrible choice. "What choice, Opengangs?" Not getting paid, and entering a haunted orphange, that is. I mean, seriously, you should get paid at least $8 per hour if you were to enter the orphanage.

A mental orphanage might not have been the most favorable place to put a horror game in (with a mental hospital being the most favorable), but that doesn't stop the creator, Npc10000, from setting it there. Early on, you can sense a foreshadowing of the game, when you spot one of the beasts jumping at you, outside of the orphanage, and it immediately puts you off. From one beast to three beasts within mere platforms high, the tone is set throughout the game.

Throughout Melonheads, the game is amazingly detailed. From just the graphics itself to how he portrays a monster, there is just so much to admire that you probably lose track that this is supposed to be a creepy horror game. Sorry, Npc10000, it's just the way it is. There were a few moments where I rested myself from walking to admire the awesome graphics, especially the portraits of the humans.

As much of a great build this was, there were some things I spotted which I didn't really enjoy. There were some predictability of when an enemy was going to appear. I found myself sitting through the dark rooms, just waiting for them to appear, and yes, they did appear (psst, I didn't use the radar.) The gameplay, itself, wasn't that great. Most of the time, I was just strolling my way around the map, which also backs up the predictability of the enemies. I also didn't like it that much due to the limitation of the story. There weren't any signs of what the backstory of the game is, or at least from what I've experienced. It was just all combat, and horror.

That shouldn't stop you from playing Melonheads, though, especially if you're the kind of guru who likes to crank up their volume very high, put on their headphones, sit in a dark room, and scare yourself until your little floppy heart can't take it anymore. Most of the time, if not all the time, when the game is very nice and fresh, it delivers a heart-thomping feeling.

The Good

Beautiful scenery makes the game an admiration for people who like art.

Great song choice/s.

Limitation of weapons, and great placement of medikits.

Great replacements of monsters.

The Bad

Limited to no evidence of any backstory.

Gameplay wasn't very interesting.

Predictability makes the game a little less scarier.

Final score: ____/_____

Well done, Npc10000.
