Hero of the Day is a game created by elroysice

Hello, and welcome to my first official review on Sploder. Today, I'll be reviewing Hero of the Day by Elroysice (my Reviewer Application).

Pre-Thoughts:

Having played many platformers in the past by Elroysice, such as the outstanding Ravequest series, and knowing he has a reputation to make fairly long, challenging games; this game had fairly high expectations to live up to. I was looking forward to the next half an hour or so to see if I could become the Hero of the day.

Review:

To start of the game, Elroy uses a clever concept which leads on to the rest of the game, by asking a series of questions to find out what type of character you are best suited to, which then leads you to a certain primary weapon, followed up by a secondary weapon, and finished off with a power up, which gives every character a unique purpose. Something which really interested me straight from the start. This sudden start made me feel as if I was in for something challenging, and that my character had a special purpose to fulfill, which Elroy cleverly used to start of his game. When passing onto the second level, this game really made me feel excited and interested about what Elroy had in store next.

Honestly, I was expecting a much tougher start to the game. I managed to get to the fifth level with full health and maximum lives left, but the placement of the enemies and the wideness of the map, made the game progress fairly slowly. The Hero type I had been matched with was the Ranger and this meant I had a very overpowered gun (with almost 2000 bullets of ammo), the whip and the ability to roll. This meant that I was passing through the mutants and robots without even being attacked myself, finding it easy to progress though the levels. Their where some clever placements of switches used underground and a few clever placements of traps here and there but overall the first few levels especially where fairly easy to progress through, due to a very special Hero with an unstoppable gun and with way to many lives to play with.

Hero of the Day was a game that you could never quite stop and relax. There was a sense of action throughout the entire game with enemies being placed non-stop and different areas you had to access to unlock different puzzles. Overall, the scenery and makeup of the forest was outstanding as it really made the game come to life with the change of above ground and underground lighting effects, helping the game flow smoothly, and making it seem as a reality. Though the scenery use and construction of the map was superb, the use of a similar path each level and similar enemies made the game slightly feel a bit boring, as you would expect what would come next. The game however flowed by smoothly as it only really moved in one direction, so you didnt feel the need that you were starting to get lost which helped run it much faster.

Whilst playing Hero of the Day, I also payed much interest towards the story, closely paying attention to each thing being said, which helped the game remain engaging and assisted a bit of humour towards it is well, as the character you would play, would always be a bit slow in the storyline. Although much of the game was fairly repetitive, a use of different sequences and puzzles in each level kept up the action and thrill which always made you feel that you may be one mistake from losing a life, therefore keeping you pinned to the edge of your seat.

Elroy used different tasks and puzzles throughout the game which made the game slightly challenging to combat, thus making it far more enjoyable play. This game had a great impact on me, and Im fairly shore others, as the satisfaction of passing through each level, ensured you where one step cbleep to the ultimate Hero which Elroy made interesting and very fun to play.

Positives:

Scenery Layout of each level was outstanding, great use of widespread maps, brought the game almost to reality.

Unique Not many platformer games have been so successful while trying these types of games, but I felt this was up there with one of the best games Ive ever played.

Action Always made you feel in the game with the placement of enemies and traps.

Negative:

Difficulty The game was too easy with plenty of lives and health kits.

Rating:

Overall Score: 17/20

Conclusion:

In Conclusion, Hero of the Day is one of the greatest RPG platformers I have ever played with a fantastic amount of innovation, action and gameplay. The difficulty however made the game easier than most, but the steadiness of small puzzles and sequences allowed the game to flow easier, and this is a game which should take a lengthy amount of time to complete, if following the storyline. Great job Elroy, keep up the fantastic work!
