Waffle s Revenge is a game created by yellowwaffle

Hello there, ladies and gentlemen, Tritertitan here giving you a review of another PPG by Yellowwaffle, and one of best in my opinion. Now, Yellowwaffle is no new face to the mainsite, he has many other features from other games I may review in the future, and he has been making PPG's for a while now. This game of his has been receiving lots of attention and its well deserved. I think this is a wonderful game, and deserves all the views it gets. Anyways I am clearly blabbing on too much, so lets get into the review.

Now, Waffle has a very particular art style utilized in pretty much all of his PPG's, where he uses very little sprites and goes with a more hand drawn approach to his scenery. Normally I would write off a game for using the textbook colors and textures, but for this game it worked for me simply because of the well implemented color selection. The colors are bright and enjoyable to look at, and the aesthetic feel of the environment is both cartoonish and artsy, which is a great blend to have concerning the scenery of a game. These truly are pitch perfect color selections on his part, and I love seeing users who are able to make a game professional-looking. On the other hand, I do have one small complaint; the backgrounds. The background in most of the levels are just a line of trees, and nothing else. This doesn't work for me simply because it's way too basic. Don't get me wrong there isn't anything wrong with a basic approach to something, if it is done right. This was not done correctly because they are copy and pasted trees which make it look lazy and like waffle didn't have any other ideas to use. Otherwise the scenery in Waffle's Revenge was breathtaking to look at, and there is no overlooking it.

Lets get into the gameplay, shall we? For starters, Waffle's Revenge is a PPG Mario-like platformer, where you jump on enemies and try to advance to the next level, and this game captures the Mario feel very well. I am a big fan of these types of games, so I was obviously interested in playing the levels. All of the levels had craft and were pretty bleep well made. The level design was exquisite, and nothing ever felt repetitive even through the entire game. Now for the difficulty, and I am not going to sugarcoat this, a lot of the difficulty came from the controls, which are so slow and draggy that I couldn't always move to the places I wanted. The jumping was way too contained and was the reason I died quite a bit while playing, and really constricts my ability to jump on enemies, but to be honest, I still believe this game still would have had decent difficulty even with great controls. Controls aside though, the gameplay in this game was a joy to play and I can't deny that this game had great craftsmanship.

Another notable thing about this game was the placement. It felt very professional and brings the game to another level I was not expecting it to go to. Each platform is placed in the perfect spot, and never feels even a bit sloppy, and the elevators and moving platforms never felt cramped or squished anywhere. You always have space to move around the levels, while still having to imply strategy so you will not die. There is a perfect number of enemies in each level, and you never feel overloaded, which is a big problem I normally have with PPG platformers. I was so happy to see that the difficulty did not come from clusters of enemies piling on top of me, and I sincerely think that the placement is even better than the gameplay and the scenery, which is saying quite a bit.

Now before I get into the final scores, I would like to tell you why I did not talk about the story. As for an answer, I skipped it because it was not needed. This is a game that does not need an intriguing story to be good, because the story in this game simply isn't important. Yeah there's a guy names Yellowwaffle and his town is burned down, then you go get your revenge. It's literally the story for every Mario game, it doesn't affect my view on the game overall because the game is not supposed to be memorable for its story, rather for its gameplay. It's just a basic, inexistent aspect of the game that doesn't need to complicated or touching because the other aspects of the game make up for it.

Pros:

-Breathtaking scenery and color palates.

-Great gameplay.

-Good level design.

-Good enemy and platform placement.

-Decent difficulty

Cons:

-Stiff controls

-Generic backgrounds

Scores:

Scenery: 9/10

Gameplay: 8.5/10

Placement: 9/10

Overall: 8.7/10

Waffle's Revenge was a breath of fresh air. Great scenery and graphics, enjoyable gameplay, and very good placement all add up to make this a great game. It truly reminds me of a Mario type platformer, and in a good way. This game deserves its feature no doubt, and it is Yellowwaffle's best game. This is a PPG I will be replaying quite a bit in the future. This is Tritertitan signing off. Have a wonderful day you lazy bums
